Kata “offer” (AGREE TO GIVE) adalah kata yang digunakan untuk meminta seseorang apakah mereka mau menerima sesuatu (would like to have something) atau apakah mereka ingin Anda melakukan sesuatu (would like you to do something).

Contoh:
Can I offer you (= would you like) a drink?
“Would you sell me that painting? “What are you offering ( = what will you pay) for it?
My father’s offered to take us to the airport.
“I’ll do the cooking,” he offered.

Offering to do something (menawarkan untuk melakukan sesuatu)

How about (or what about) + v-ing/noun…?
How about (or what about) going to the cinema?

Why don’t + we/you + v …?
Why don’t we go to the beach while it’s sunny?
Why don’t you leave a message? then Mr Johnston’s secretary will take it and he’ll call you back when he’s availabe.

Why not + v …?
why not do this again later? We need a break.

we could/should + v …
We could go to the cinema instead of just staying in.
we should celebrate your college admission

Shall we + v …?
Shall we go before it starts raining?

Let’s + v …
It’s raining cats and dogs. Let’s just stay in and watch some DVDs.

Responding to an offer to do something

Accepting an offer to do something

  • Yes/yeah, great/fine/OK/that’s a good idea/that sounds good.
  • Sure, If you like.
  • Yes, I don’t mind.
  • Let’s!

Refusing an offer to do something
I think I’d rather go to the concert.

Ada banyak cara untuk “offer to do something.”
– Is it a formal conversation?
– Is it informal?

Contoh:

  • Maybe we could go together to the charity benefit.
  • Perhaps we should go inside. The event will start in a few minutes.
  • I think we should go over the proposal once more.

Informal:
Why don’t we go to the park? The weather’s too nice to waste just being at home.
Yeah, that’s a great idea. Let’s go.

Formal:
Perhaps we could try another way to solve this problem?
Yes, of course. I was thinking that we should leave this part, but change that one.

Dialog Example:
Yuna : Ah, there you are. I’ve been looking for you everywhere.
Tina : What is it?
Yuna : Oh, nothing. I’m feeling bored. It’s Sunday and I’ve nothing to do.
Tina : Oh, that’s a coincidence. I have two tickets to the cinema. I don’t know who to go with. Would you like to go with me?
Yuna : I’d love to! What time is it?
Tina : It’s 1 p.m. now.
Yun : What should we do until then? I’m still bored now.
Tina : How about helping me tend the garden?
Yuna : Okay.
